PurposeFull Paws celebrates HOPE!

Hope is a very special Assistance Dog in training and she just passed her first public access test!  This will allow Hope and her partner to go out to public places and get used to all the different sights, smells and other distractions. Over the next few months we will continue her training in a variety of different locations- restaurants, stores, offices etc. to make sure that when she graduates that she is ready to help her partner through any situation.hopehope

We are so excited to work with Hope and her partner Deanna- we are proud to have them as part of our PurposeFull Paws family!

PurposeFull Paws thanks Countryside Doodles for the wonderful donation of our puppy Rowdy Country or “Rowdy” for short.  Owner, Debbie, contacted PurposeFull Paws to donate a puppy to our Assistance/Service Dog program.  She has a heart for Veterans and those with disabilities who need one of our wonderful dogs to make a difference in their life.  We enjoyed visiting the beautiful facility at Countryside Doodles and meeting a few litters of adorable puppies.  We chose the sweetest little boy- he is confident, gentle and playful.  He is also a “quick study” in commands- so smart!   We are so grateful for Rowdy- thank you so much Debbie & Countryside Doodles!  We know that he is going to make a HUGE difference in someones life!countryside doodles

Please join PurposeFull Paws for our Volunteer Introduction Class this Saturday- July 9, 2016 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at our Training Center in Martinsburg.  We need volunteers for many positions- puppy raiser families, weekend puppy helpers, grant writers, admin assistance, advertising assistance and we are always looking for help with manual labor- cleaning, errands etc., etc.

The first part of our class will be an introduction to PurposeFull Paws, our staff and current volunteers.  We will explain who we are and what we do.  You will get to meet some of our dogs and find out about how we operate.  Anyone wishing to volunteer in any capacity will need to attend this part of the class.  The second part of the class will cover the information on becoming a puppy raiser family – or working in any capacity of training our dogs.   After taking this class- you will be ready to begin hands on training for your position.

Anyone is welcome to attend.  Any children under the age of 16 will need to come with a parent to both the class and any volunteer opportunities.  Any child between the age of 16-18 will need a parent to sign the volunteer contract, also.  We welcome anyone in the community to attend – even if they are only interested in learning about PurposeFull Paws and the services that we offer.

……  to help those who are in need of a Service/Assistance Dog!!  Apple Valley Toyota did a Facebook fundraiser and raised over $500 for PurposeFull Paws!!  When local businesses team up with us- they make it possible for us to raise and train more Service/Assistance Dogs for those with disabilities.

We were thinking, what better way to show them that we put their donations to good use than visiting with some of our dogs in training.  We got some great photos with the salespeople and employees- such a wonderful group of people- we are so proud to call them one of our “Doggone Wonderful Business Pawtners”!!!!  We believe that businesses like Apple Valley Toyota are special because they generously give to help those with needs in our community.  Stop in to Apple Valley Toyota   Chevrolet    Scion  in  the Foxcroft Towne Center in Martinsburg, WV and tell them that the Assistance Dogs from PurposeFull Paws sent you!!!!

A PurposeFull Paws Recap to let everyone know what we have been up to over these last few months….we have had alot of exciting things going on!!!!

February Valentines Benefit– February 12, 2016- Mr Extravaganza does it again!  PurposeFull Paws had a table at the Valentine’s Day Dance at the Martinsburg Holiday Inn to support a wonderful cause- The Martinsburg DAV  This nonprofit group assists disabled veterans with rides, employment, benefits- etc. – truly a worthy cause!  We had a wonderful time meeting these wonderful volunteers and, as always, enjoying the music and entertainment of Bill Norris- Mr Extravaganza!

Foxcroft Towne Center- Martinsburg Home Show- March 11-13, 2016 – PurposeFull Paws joined the many vendors at the Martinsburg Home Show to talk to people about what we can offer as a business to our clients.  It was great to introduce some of the dogs in our program to people in our community.  We met people who are planning to volunteer with as as well as some individuals who could benefit from a PurposeFull Paws Assistance Dog!

Update on Dogs in Training– check out our teams and how well they are doing!!  In 2015 we started another “type” of training where the puppies are raised with their families and come to us for weeks of training over the course of 2 years.  All of our teams have passed their public access tests so they can take their dogs out and get them used to different experiences- the mall, the grocery store and even the movie theater!  We are so proud of our Service Dog Teams in Training- check out the photos below!

…Independent Mortgage Company.for allowing us to join them in honoring our nations Veterans!  We had a great time at their “Boot Camp”  – a day where they honor Veterans each year by giving something special back to some of those who have given so much to our nation!  We enjoyed meeting everyone and getting an opportunity to share information about PurposeFull Paws!

Last year Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation (Delaware location) purchased a very special puppy named Rambo for Matthew, a retired Army Veteran.  Matt & Rambo are currently going through training at PurposeFull Paws- we are so honored to be part of Rambo’s training and look forward to the possibility of providing more PurposeFull Paws Assistance Dogs to Veterans in need!!

celebrating

PurposeFull Paws is CELEBRATING – Dusty, the Newfoundland, passing his public access test!  At only 8 months old our wonderful Dusty was able to pass his public access test this weekend.  You can watch some videos of Dusty in the Martinsburg Mall- just click on them at the bottom of this post.

Dusty’s partner is a young girl with neurological difficulties that include some behaviors on the Autism Spectrum .  While she will be partnered with Dusty, her mother will be Dusty’s handler and the person who gives him his commands. Dusty’s partner will be tethered to him in public to protect her from running into dangerous situations.  Dusty will also provide companionship, both at home and out in public,  to help calm extreme reactions to changes in her surroundings that can cause her become very upset.  Eventually, when he is full grown, Dusty will provide balance support and assistance to stand up after a fall since his partner also has a weakness on one side of her body.   Dusty could get as large as 150-175 lbs so balance assistance should be no problem!

Not only is Dusty as soft and fluffy as he looks-he really is a big teddy bear!  He is a gentle giant who loves children and other dogs- especially his buddy Yellow Lab Oden!!  They love to play together after a long day of training!

PurposeFull Paws has a new look!

new look

new lookWe got to show off our new display at our benefit dance in November.  A big thanks goes out to Jason Wagner of Red Bear Rustics for the awesome western signs!  We were so excited to show off our western flair as well as the photos of our dogs in training.  Our display has all of the information about the services we offer and types of dogs that we train.  PurposeFull Paws works hard to explain and educate others on what Assistance/Service Dogs can do for people with disabilities.  We are looking forward to the opportunity to take our display to different locations and events in 2016.  Keep an eye out for it- and come introduce yourself if you see us!
